Meet Sonia
I suppose I can introduce myself by sharing what art is for me. Throughout my childhood, I remember drawing, colouring outside lines in books, and painting foam heads my parents’ had (to their chagrin). Creativity has always been as natural to me as breathing. When I was looking for a career in my 20s and came across graphic design, it felt like a natural fit. And it was for 22 years plus 3 years of college.
Being a professional fine artist literally never occurred to me as being a possibility. I suspect part of that's because my mother, who was an artist, said often, "Art is a great way to live your life, but you'll never make any money at it!". At the time, there were also commercials for "Starving Artist Sales!" so you can maybe understand why I never thought it was possible to support myself as a fine artist.
In 2015, 20 years into my graphic design career, I went to a paint party. Lightning struck, and there I was, falling in love with arting!
It was a bit of a shock, really. It got me looking on YouTube, and that’s when I came across a video of a guy using acrylics to paint graffiti-style art on canvas. He had me at quirky eyes!
From there, it’s been quite a ride! My personal life took a hit in 2017 when first my father and then my mother were diagnosed with cancer. This was at a time when my son was young and my husband was flying around, keeping us afloat financially. Finding time to work on my art career was a distinct challenge.
I’m thrilled to now be at a time where I can focus on my projects—creating art and empowering fellow artists.
30+ years of my experience working with digital images as a professional designer/artist. You also benefit from what I call my tenacious nature and what my family calls my stubbornness.
My knowledge of industry-standard and lesser-known apps, tricks, and techniques. My curiosity about new techniques = new training for you.
Bi-weekly workshops that you can ask me your questions, get support for your challenges, be encouraged, and celebrated.
A community group where I will provide written support at any time. Please allow me a day or 2 to respond.
Get feedback by sharing your images so I can see what your challenge is and another way for you to get answers.
Closed captions on every video because I’m hearing impaired and rely on them, myself. Please forgive me for using auto-generated captions and the resulting boo-boos. (I’d love to hold a contest for the funniest one found!! LOL)
~ You can skip the more personal stuff below, if you like. ~
Penny, myself, and the blonde hair I rode in with.
I adopted Penny when I was 32. One of the best experiences of my life was helping Penny transform. She went from feeling extreme anxiety/fear and being dangerous to handle to calm, trusting, and safe within 6 months. I wish I could have kept her.
I’m obsessed with home decor TV shows. I’ve watched them while sipping my tea on weekend mornings since the days of Trading Spaces. The guilt of my pleasure is begging me to watch absolutely anything but that.
I made…A Delorean!
I made a Time Machine… out of cardboard! Yup! As well as wires, tubes, and a lot of glue and tape. Halloween at work, 2015. Great Scott!
I worked at a pig farm. I was covered in pig poop from head to toe on a weekly basis. I did medical things that nobody should think about, let alone do. Friends no longer wanted to be within sniff distance of me. The piglets were worth it. The poop not so much.
Rob the hub, Kyle the kid, and me.
I was born in Galt, Ontario, Canada, in 1968. My parents and brother immigrated to southern Ontario from England “for 2 years” in 1967 and stayed. I was the first in my family to be born in Canada. My son is now the second.
I’m now happily settled with my hub, Rob, son, Kyle, and our two rambunctious sibling cats, Comet and Jouster. We live in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.
Theory and practical training that enlightens and empowers fine artists to present their art so well their audience can’t resist.
